Why is blogging so hard?

I like blogs. Wait let me rephrase that, I like the idea of having a blog. What I don’t like so much is the way I have to think of things to write about. Don’t get my wrong I love writing my posts, and it’s even better when people find it interesting enough to leave a comment. It’s just that I never kept a diary or anything, so I’m not used to writing down every little thought. I don’t want to worry that what I’m writing isn’t appropriate or isn’t interesting, but I can’t be certain unless I get feedback.

I try to write a post when something happens, or when I have something to talk about, although on that second point I could be here forever. Right now however, not much is happening and I’m scraping the barrel to keep this blog running.

So what’s happening at the moment? Well I’ve decided to give up , hence why I’m writing a post at 6:30am having been up all night. It’s not gonna be easy but luckily I’ve got a girl and family that’s supportive and understanding. I just hope I don’t get too grumpy with them in the next week or so :)

I’ve promised myself a shiny new PC at the end of the month if I can be good and not smoke, problem is I’m my own adjudicator. I’ll have to get people to keep an eye on me and my credit card.

That’s about it for now really. Oh has got an interview for this month, so fingers and toes crossed for her. I’ll take her out somewhere nice so she doesn’t worry about it too much beforehand.

Umm, I think if I write anything else it’ll be rubbish so I’ll keep this post short and sweet. Take care peeps and have fun :P

Sounds great! Your blog is one of my most favorite now ;). You have hit the nail on the head, just like you always do.

I know what you mean — blogging is not as easy as it sounds. Let me rephrase that — it’s difficult to write something well and make it interesting.

Personally, I find the best things to remember are:
1. Only write if you feel motivated enough to do so — no point in forcing yourself.
2. When you get an idea for something to write about, bounce the idea around for a few days until you feel happy to write — any required research done, if required etc.
3. Put links in to your articles to support your view.
4. Use tags heavily to help people find your posts via RSS news feeds like Technorati etc.
5. If you want to bring more traffic then leaving links to your posts on multiple websites increases the number of pathways people can follow to find your posts…
6. And finally, keep writing and it becomes easier each day.

And congratulations with stopping smoking!

Cheers,
Simon

I forgot to say: (and apologies if you already know all of this)

When you publish an article, make sure that all the relevant news aggregators like Technorati etc get notified so they will then crawl your article. Then you can check to see if they have crawled your article by going to, for example:

http://feeds.technorati.com/tag/smoking
http://feeds.technorati.com/tag/university
http://feeds.technorati.com/tag/taz

This example will work if (1) you used these 3 tags when you published your article, and (2) when you publish, you ping or notify Technorati.com

The more news aggregator sites you notify when you publish, the more links there are for people to find your articles. And the Google crawler/bot loves people to use tags too — it makes it easier for them to rank your posts in their search engine.
